BA (Hons) Graphic Communication

The course provides industry-relevant skills in various fields of graphic communication. Lecturers are well placed within industry and research to give commercially relevant guidance based on current trends and historical contexts.

Students are encouraged to collaborate with each other and with other disciplines across the University, developing new ideas, perspectives and connections.

Our students have the opportunity to work on live projects throughout their three years of study. Examples of live projects have included: Birmingham Design Festival, Gallery 1988, Lounge Underwear, Malthouse Engineering, Birmingham Fringe Festival, Studio Blup, Bombay Sapphire, Turner Duckworth, Baxter & Bailey, Stranger and Stranger, Lawless, Sutherland Studio and Design Bridge. Students are encouraged to participate in leading international design competitions including D&AD, YCN, RSA, and Starpack. Our undergraduate students are pro-active in engaging with the Midlands’ vibrant design community, including the Birmingham Design Festival, BDF Gather, Fuse Birmingham and Ladies, Wine & Design. Students are encouraged to develop placements during their study, with many developing as freelance designers and some developing their own design consultancies.

Alongside the course content students have the opportunity to engage with the following staff and student led initiatives. Sideline explores creative freedom with digital and analogue processes in the format of workshops and exhibitions. Through Sideline, students have worked with creatives such as Accept & Proceed and Studio Dumbar. Print Club has a focus on analogue techniques such as collage and traditional printmaking methods. Print Club members have collaborated with the likes of Patrick Thomas, Design Manchester and Anthony Burrill on various projects. Type Talks are a series of public facing talks on behalf of the School of Viscom that gives valuable insight into creatives’ practices. Previous guest speakers have included Bobby C Martin Jr, Sarah Boris, Jonathan Barnbrook, Adrian Shaughnessy, Dalton Maag and Gail Anderson. Other initiatives include Coffee Lounge, Nerdy Social Club and the newly founded Creative Exchange. Students are also supported throughout the course and after graduating by Careers+ and Keep Track.
